Sigismund von Schrattenbach ruled Salzburg from 1753 until his death in 1771, and his tenure coincided directly with the years Leopold Mozart was employed at the court as vice-Kapellmeister. It was Schrattenbach who funded and supported the young Wolfgang's early Italian tours, a patronage arrangement that made Salzburg's archiepiscopal mint an indirect financier of some of the most consequential musical travel of the 18th century.
