Leopold Anton von Firmian served as Archbishop of Salzburg from 1727 until his death in 1744, and is remembered less for his coinage than for the Salzburg expulsion of 1731–1732 — the forced deportation of roughly 20,000 Protestant subjects from his territories, one of the largest forced migrations in 18th-century Central Europe. The diplomatic fallout reached the Imperial court and drew condemnation across Protestant Europe.
The Zöttl reference numbers 2553–2559 indicate at least seven die variants across this issue's production run, a reminder that Salzburg's mint was prolific and that individual pieces can often be pinned to specific years within the range.
