Johann Christian and Georg Rudolf were the two surviving sons of Joachim Friedrich of Liegnitz-Brieg, forced into a joint rule arrangement under Habsburgs who were increasingly anxious about Silesian Protestant autonomy. The co-regency lasted only until 1609, when the brothers partitioned the duchy — Johann Christian taking Brieg, Georg Rudolf retaining Liegnitz. Ducats struck during joint reigns are inherently short-window issues, and this one spans just three years of an uneasy fraternal arrangement operating under the shadow of Rudolf II's campaign to reassert Catholic imperial authority over Silesia's nobility.
