| Obverse description | Within a beaded inner circle, the robed figure of Duke Francis Josias kneels in profile at right, arms outstretched in supplication before the crucified Christ on the cross at left, set against a landscape with a town and trees in the middle ground and a castle at right. A devotional German-language legend in Gothic lettering encircles the scene, reading: IESV DV SOHN DAVID ERBARME DICH MEIN LAS DIR AN MEINER GNADE GENÜGEN. The composition is rendered in a fine Baroque pictorial style characteristic of early eighteenth-century German commemorative ducats. |

In the centre of the field, a spread eagle soars amid billowing clouds, its wings outstretched. A terrestrial globe rests on the ground in the lower field. The circumferential Latin legend reads CORONAM DECORAM SERVATOR CONFERT ET SERVAT, while a two-line Latin inscription in the exergue reads NON EST MORTALE QUOD OPTO, together conveying a pious Baroque funerary and celestial allegory. |
