The Ferrero-Fieschi family held Masserano as a tiny imperial fief wedged between Savoy and Spanish Milan — a precarious position that made the right to mint coinage politically loaded. Francesco Filiberto exercised that right aggressively in the 1590s, producing gold ducats that asserted his standing as a sovereign lord despite controlling a territory measured in villages rather than provinces. The Holy Roman Emperor's grant of minting privileges was the actual legal foundation here, not any regional authority.
Fr#621 is among the rarer ducats of the minor north Italian lordships. Masserano's mint output was never large.
