Charles Theodore inherited the Palatinate electorate in 1743 at age seventeen following the extinction of the Sulzbach line, making him one of the youngest ruling princes in the Empire at the time. His early ducats, including this 1746 issue, predate the period when his court at Mannheim became a genuine cultural and intellectual center — the famous Mannheim orchestra was still in its formative years, and the electoral finances remained heavily burdened by debts inherited from his predecessor.
