The Batavian Republic, installed by French Revolutionary forces in 1795 after ousting the old Dutch Republic, inherited a monetary system fragmented across seven formerly sovereign provinces — each with its own mint and traditions. Utrecht continued striking under its own provincial identity even within the new republican framework. This copper square ducat is a trial or pattern-adjacent piece; the gold ducat it mimics was a deeply entrenched trade coin, and copper versions served administrative or presentation purposes rather than ordinary commerce.
