Balthasar von Promnitz held the See of Breslau from 1539 until his death in 1562, navigating one of the most fractious periods in Silesian ecclesiastical history as Lutheranism spread rapidly through the region's nobility and burghers. He was himself suspected of Protestant sympathies — a charge that complicated his standing in Rome without ever resolving cleanly in either direction. That ambiguity made his tenure administratively awkward and politically exposed.
Ducats of this type are scarce. Breslau's episcopal mint output was never large, and the decade straddled by this issue saw repeated interruptions from competing jurisdictional pressures between the Habsburgs and local Silesian estates.
