Beschrijving keerzijde At the centre of the field, a left-facing Little Owl (Athene noctua) stands in profile, a motif directly inspired by the iconic ancient Athenian tetradrachm of the 5th century BC associated with the goddess Athena. The denomination numeral 1 appears to the left of the owl, with the Greek legend ΔΡΑΧΜΗ to the right, and the engraver's abbreviated signature Ν. ΠΕΡ. (Nikos Perantinos) positioned below. The reverse design consciously evokes classical Hellenic heritage through its reference to one of the most celebrated coin types of antiquity.

Aanvullende informatie

The 1973 drachma was issued by the military junta that had seized power in April 1967, and this particular year's coinage carries an added layer of instability: 1973 saw the regime abolish the monarchy it had nominally preserved for six years, declaring Greece a republic in June following a stage-managed referendum. The coins struck that year thus straddle two constitutional fictions within a single calendar.

The junta collapsed the following year after the Cyprus disaster, and civilian democracy was restored under Karamanlis in July 1974.
