The Pala dynasty ruled Bengal and Bihar for roughly four centuries, and their silver coinage reflects a monetary system that scholars still debate in its specifics — attribution of individual rulers within the dynasty remains contested, with Vigrahapala I occupying an early and poorly documented reign somewhere in the mid-ninth century. The dynastic sequence itself was only systematically worked out in the twentieth century through copperplate inscriptions, not coin evidence.
Pala silver is notoriously difficult to assign with precision; many pieces circulated across multiple reigns without re-minting.
