Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse displays three Ujjain symbols — each consisting of a circle with four smaller circles at the cardinal points — arranged in a triangular cluster at the center of the field. These symbols are a hallmark of Satavahana coinage and are rendered in low hammered relief. A surrounding legend in Prakrit script runs along the periphery of the irregular flan. The overall fabric is rough and typical of hand-struck silver drachms of the western Deccan tradition.

Aanvullende informatie

Gautamiputra Satakarni is one of the few Satavahana rulers whose historical record extends beyond numismatics — a Nasik cave inscription commissioned by his mother Gautami Balashri describes him as having "destroyed the pride of the Kshatrapas" and crushed the Western Kshatrapa king Nahapana. The silver drachm coinage he issued was directly modeled on the Kshatrapa punch-marked type, a deliberate appropriation of the defeated enemy's monetary idiom. Some examples were likely struck from melted Nahapana issues — an economic and symbolic act in one.
