Additional information

Gautamiputra Satakarni is one of the few Satavahana rulers whose historical record extends beyond numismatics — a Nasik cave inscription commissioned by his mother Gautami Balashri describes him as having "destroyed the pride of the Kshatrapas" and crushed the Western Kshatrapa king Nahapana. The silver drachm coinage he issued was directly modeled on the Kshatrapa punch-marked type, a deliberate appropriation of the defeated enemy's monetary idiom. Some examples were likely struck from melted Nahapana issues — an economic and symbolic act in one.
