Populonia, an Etruscan city on the Tyrrhenian coast of northern Italy, was the only Etruscan settlement known to have minted its own coinage — most Etruscan communities relied on traded or imitated Greek issues. This hare series belongs to the earliest phase of Populonian silver, a period when the city's control of iron ore deposits from the island of Elba was generating enough commercial activity to warrant a local monetary issue.
