Sierra Leone has issued commemorative dollars under this series for decades, licensing Egyptian iconography through various minting programs with little direct historical connection to the issuing nation. The Tutankhamun throne pieces draw on artifacts recovered from the 1922 tomb discovery by Howard Carter — a centenary this coin was almost certainly timed to mark.
Virenium, a proprietary copper-based alloy developed by Pobjoy Mint, gives the piece its distinctive pale gold tone without plating.
