Palau's micro-gold issues from this period were produced by the Austrian Mint under contract, part of a wave of sub-gram bullion-adjacent collectibles marketed heavily through European telemarketing channels in the late 2000s. The Golden Fleece series drew on Argonaut mythology largely as a licensing convenience — the theme required no sovereign permission and carried broad international name recognition.
At 0.5 g, these were never serious monetary instruments. Palau's nominal dollar denomination on foreign-minted micro-golds of this type was a legal formality enabled by the country's use of the U.S. dollar and its open coinage licensing arrangements.
