Rouyn-Noranda itself didn't exist until the 1920s copper and gold mining boom drew workers north into the Abitibi region of Quebec — one of the last major mineral rushes in Canadian history. The diocese was carved out of existing ecclesiastical territory in 1953 specifically to serve that mining population, making it among the younger Catholic dioceses in the country.
