Obverse description A lion in a crouching or prowling posture occupies the central field, depicted in high relief atop a rocky outcrop with ground vegetation, facing left with its maned head lowered. The circular legend SIERRA LEONE COMPANY arcs along the left and upper periphery, while AFRICA is inscribed in the lower field separated by a straight line below the lion. The design is enclosed within a finely milled border of raised beads.

Reverse description The central device depicts two clasped hands — a symbol of trade and partnership — rendered in fine engraved detail with cuffed sleeves, set within an otherwise plain field. The numeral 100 appears above the clasped hands and again below them, denoting the coin's value in cents. The circular legend ONE DOLLAR PIECE runs around the periphery, with the date 1791 inscribed in the lower exergue. A milled bead border frames the entire design.
