The 2013 Native American Dollar commemorates the 1778 Treaty of Fort Pitt, the first formal treaty between the United States government and a Native American nation — the Lenape, known to colonists as the Delaware. Negotiated just two years into the Revolutionary War, the treaty promised the Delaware full statehood and congressional representation in exchange for military alliance and passage rights through their territory.
