The 2013 Native American Dollar commemorates the 1778 Treaty of Fort Pitt, the first formal treaty between the United States government and a Native American nation — the Lenape, known to colonists as the Delaware. Negotiated just two years into the Revolutionary War, the treaty promised the Delaware full statehood and congressional representation in exchange for military alliance and passage rights through their territory. Neither promise was honored.
Congress authorized the Native American Dollar series in 2008, mandating annual design changes and a minimum mintage allocation. The 2013 issue was struck at both Philadelphia and Denver.
