Obverse description The central vignette, engraved by Charles Burt and titled "Concordia", presents two classical maidens clasping hands before a flaming altar, rendered in fine intaglio. The issuing bank's name and charter location appear in bold blackletter script across the upper portion of the note, flanked by ornate guilloche borders and repeating "ONE" / "NATIONAL CURRENCY" lettering along the margins. Reverse description The reverse is dominated by the large intaglio vignette "Landing of the Pilgrims" at centre, illustrating the Pilgrims' arrival on the New England shore in a richly detailed composition. An oval to the left contains the seal of the U.S. state in which the issuing bank is chartered, while an oval to the right bears an American Eagle; both ovals are surrounded by fine lathe-work guilloche. Extensive legal-tender and anti-counterfeiting text in letterpress fills the upper and lower registers, with "ONE" and "LANDING OF THE PILGRIMS" inscribed in bold type.
