Beschrijving voorzijde The national coat of arms of Liberia occupies the central field, depicting a three-masted sailing ship at sea, a palm tree, and a rising sun on the shore, all within a shield surmounted by a dove in flight. A scrolled ribbon across the shield bears the national motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE, and a secondary legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA appears on a banner below the shield. The date 1999 is divided by the arms, with 19 to the left and 99 to the right. The circular outer legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA runs along the upper rim, and the denomination 1 DOLLAR is inscribed at the base, separated from the central device by a beaded inner border.

Aanvullende informatie

Liberia's late-1990s commemorative program was, bluntly, a revenue operation — the country was in the grip of civil war aftermath and had no functioning economy to speak of. These coins were never intended for domestic circulation. They were produced under contract by foreign mints and sold directly to the international collector market, with proceeds benefiting the Liberian government's hard currency reserves rather than any conservation program the "Marine-life Protection" title implies.
