The Super Pit — formally the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines open-cut operation — is one of the largest open-cast gold mines in the world, stretching roughly 3.5 km long and nearly 600 metres deep. Mining at the site dates to the 1890s Kalgoorlie gold rush, though the current pit consolidation only began in earnest in 1989 after the merger of several underground leases. The Perth Mint's proximity to Western Australia's goldfields has made it the natural issuer of commemoratives tied to the region's extractive history.
The "6th Portrait" designation reflects Jody Clark's effigy of Elizabeth II, introduced across Commonwealth coinage from 2015 — meaning this particular coin was struck after her death in September 2022, during the transitional period before Charles III portraiture was fully adopted.
