The Super Pit — formally the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines open-cut operation — is one of the largest open-cast gold mines in the world, stretching roughly 3.5 km long and nearly 600 metres deep. Mining at the site dates to the 1890s Kalgoorlie gold rush, though the current pit consolidation only began in earnest in 1989 after the merger of several underground leases.
