Authorized under the National World War II Memorial American Eagle Silver Dollar Coin Act, this issue directed a five-dollar surcharge from each sale toward the National World War II Memorial in Washington — the same funding mechanism used for the 1993 World War II commemoratives that helped build the memorial in the first place. Congress chose the "Greatest Generation" designation deliberately, borrowing Tom Brokaw's 1998 phrase as official statutory language, which is unusual for mint legislation.
Production was capped by statute, with the Philadelphia and San Francisco mints sharing striking duties across proof and uncirculated formats.
