Palau has issued butterfly-themed dollars in copper-nickel since the early 2000s, targeting the collector market rather than circulation — none of these pieces ever saw meaningful use as currency on the islands. The Graphium agamemnon, the tailed jay butterfly native to South and Southeast Asia, is an odd choice for a Pacific microstate with no particular entomological connection to the species, which points squarely at the topical collector trade driving the selection.
