Sierra Leone issued a wave of commemorative dollars in the late 1990s targeting the thematic collector market — royal anniversaries, wildlife, sporting events — most produced by outside minting houses with little connection to the issuing country. This piece marks the 1997 golden wedding anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, an event that generated commemorative issues from dozens of Commonwealth and associated territories simultaneously.
