Beschrijving keerzijde A detailed architectural rendering of the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus occupies the central field, depicted in three-quarter perspective with its iconic colonnade of Ionic columns, stepped stylobate, and entablature. Small human figures are shown in the foreground to convey the temple's monumental scale. The denomination 1$ appears in the upper central field above the temple façade. The arc legend SEVEN WONDERS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD curves along the upper periphery, while TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS is inscribed along the lower border. Decorative scroll ornaments flank the lower legend on either side.

Aanvullende informatie

Part of a now-familiar series commemorating the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, this miniature gold issue derives its subject from the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus — a structure that was, by ancient account, burned to the ground in 356 BC by Herostratus, a man who committed the act purely to ensure his name would be remembered. The Ephesian authorities responded by making it a capital offense to speak his name. It didn't work.
