Part of a now-familiar series commemorating the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, this miniature gold issue derives its subject from the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus — a structure that was, by ancient account, burned to the ground in 356 BC by Herostratus, a man who committed the act purely to ensure his name would be remembered. The Ephesian authorities responded by making it a capital offense to speak his name. It didn't work.
