Issued to mark the 25th anniversary of Elizabeth II's accession, this dollar was produced in two distinct varieties distinguished by water lines in the design — one with visible lines, one without. The difference arose from progressive die wear and modification during the production run rather than any deliberate policy decision, making the three catalog variants (806a, b, c) a useful study in how the Royal Canadian Mint managed high-volume commemorative strikes in the 1970s.
The .500 fine silver content reflects a compromise already in force since 1967, when rising silver prices forced a reduction from the traditional .800 standard used on Canadian dollars for decades prior.
