Sakamoto Ryōma was assassinated in Kyoto in 1867 at thirty-three, just months before the Meiji Restoration he had helped engineer. His role in brokering the Satchō Alliance — the pact between rival Satsuma and Chōshū domains that effectively ended the Tokugawa shogunate — was largely unrecognized in official records during his lifetime, as much of his work was covert.
