Obverse lettering QUEEN ELIZABETH II 1 DOLLAR TUVALU 2010
Reverse description Left-facing portrait bust of the German Romantic composer Robert Schumann, rendered in an engraved sketch style, occupying the left half of the field. Overlapping the portrait is a large treble clef in relief, which transitions into a background of musical staff lines bearing handwritten-style notation, evoking a manuscript score, filling the right half of the field. The legend ROBERT SCHUMANN and the composer's birth and death years 1810 – 1856 appear in italic script along the upper-right and lower-right periphery respectively. The Perth Mint's P mintmark and the engraver's initials RV are present in the lower field.

Additional information

Issued as part of the Perth Mint's ongoing commemorative dollar program, this piece marks the bicentenary of Schumann's birth in 1810. Schumann spent the final years of his life in a psychiatric institution in Endenich, near Bonn, committed in 1854 after a breakdown and an attempt to drown himself in the Rhine. He died there in 1856, never having recovered. The Perth Mint's interest in European cultural figures during this period reflected a broader push into the collector coin market, where themed silver issues were increasingly competing with German and Swiss mints for the same buyer base.
