Issued the same year Diana died in Paris — August 1997 — this Niuean commemorative was part of a wave of tribute coinage that flooded the market within months of the crash in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel. Niue had by then established itself as a prolific issuer of licensed commemoratives with no domestic circulation intent, producing coins primarily for the collector and souvenir trade through external distributors.
