The "Mother Loon and Baby Chicks" dollar was issued as part of the RCM's annual specimen set for 2012, replacing the standard Arnott loon design exclusively within that packaging — it never entered circulation. The subject reflects a documented loon behavior: chicks routinely ride on the adult's back during their first weeks to avoid hypothermia and predation, a detail the RCM has leaned on repeatedly for wildlife series releases.
Specimen finishing on bronze-plated nickel produces shallower field contrast than silver, and this type shows it.
