Reverse description A highly detailed depiction of a common loon (Gavia immer) floating on a still lake with two small chicks, engraved by Arnold Nogy to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the loonie. The adult loon is shown in three-quarter view occupying the central field, its characteristic checkered plumage rendered with fine stippling detail, while one chick rides on its back and a second swims to the left. The dual dates '1987' and '2012' appear at lower right, flanking the engraver's initials 'AN' at lower left. The legend 'CANADA' arcs along the upper periphery and 'DOLLAR' along the lower periphery in bold Roman capitals, with the water's reflective surface suggested by horizontal lines in the lower field.
