Issued as part of the Royal Canadian Mint's NHL team series, this coin was produced to mark the Canadiens' centennial season in 2008–09 — the franchise having been founded in 1909, making it the oldest professional hockey club in the world still operating. The series was a commercial licensing exercise as much as a numismatic one, with coins sold directly to collectors rather than circulating through the banking system.
