Additional information

Part of a broader wave of silver dollar issues that Niue — a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand — licensed to foreign minting operations throughout the 2000s and 2010s. The island's legal authority to issue currency under New Zealand monetary arrangements made it a convenient vehicle for commemorative programs with no direct connection to Niuean history or culture. Milan's cathedral, the Duomo di Milano, took nearly six centuries to complete, from its foundation in 1386 under Gian Galeazzo Visconti to the final spire finial added in 1965.
