| Obverse description | Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, depicted at approximately 64 years of age, engraved by Dora de Pédery-Hunt. The Queen is shown diademed, wearing a necklace and drop earrings, in a mature and regal portrait style characteristic of the Pédery-Hunt series used on Canadian coinage from 1990 to 2003. The legend arcs around the upper periphery of the field. |

| Reverse description | The reverse, designed by Stan Witten, depicts three Canadian ice hockey players in dynamic celebratory poses following the decisive victory over the Soviet Union in the 1972 Canada–USSR Summit Series. Two players raise their sticks triumphantly in the left foreground while a third figure is shown near the goal net at right, where a Soviet goaltender lies sprawled on the ice. The anniversary dates '1972' and '1997' flank a stylized maple leaf emblem in the upper right field. Bilingual inscriptions in French and English appear in the lower central field, with the denomination legend 'CANADA DOLLAR' arcing along the lower rim. |
