HMS Hood was destroyed on 24 May 1941 by the German battleship Bismarck and heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen in the Denmark Strait. Of her crew of 1,418, three survived. The loss shocked Britain — Hood had been the largest warship in the Royal Navy and a symbol of imperial naval power for two decades. Churchill ordered the destruction of Bismarck within days.
Tuvalu's naval commemorative series issued through the Perth Mint has produced numerous .999 silver crowns of this type. The wreck of Hood was located in 2001 by David Mearns at a depth of approximately 2,800 metres.
