Lachlan Macquarie served as Governor of New South Wales from 1810 to 1821 and is credited with commissioning Australia's first domestic coinage — the holey dollar and dump of 1813, punched from Spanish colonial 8 reales to prevent specie from leaving the colony. Tuvalu's commemorative dollar series has frequently drawn on Australian colonial history, a logical pairing given the country's use of the Australian dollar as its circulating currency.
The holey dollar itself was conceived under acute coin shortage conditions, with Macquarie personally petitioning London for a local solution after imported coinage kept draining back out through trade.
