The golden toad (Incilius periglenes) was declared extinct in 1989, making it one of the first species formally linked to climate-driven collapse — a distinction that gave it outsized symbolic weight in conservation debates throughout the 1990s and 2000s. It was last observed in the Monteverde cloud forest of Costa Rica in 1987, a single sighting of one male. Niue has built a substantial bullion and collector program around endangered and extinct fauna, and this issue falls squarely within that commercial strategy rather than any particular numismatic tradition of the island itself.
