The golden toad (Incilius periglenes) was declared extinct in 1989, making it one of the first species formally linked to climate-driven collapse — a distinction that gave it outsized symbolic weight in conservation debates throughout the 1990s and 2000s. It was last observed in the Monteverde cloud forest of Costa Rica in 1987, a single sighting of one male.
