These pieces never circulate on the island — Niue's actual monetary needs are met by New Zealand currency — making the "1 Dollar" denomination a legal fiction underwritten by a treaty arrangement with New Zealand that grants Niue the right to issue coin.
The Emperor Tamarin takes its name from a fanciful resemblance to Kaiser Wilhelm II, a comparison first made by researchers and eventually adopted as common usage.
