Niue's authority to issue legal tender collector coins derives from a 1975 arrangement with New Zealand, which remains responsible for the island's defense and foreign affairs. The territory has leveraged that issuing right aggressively since the 1990s, contracting with the New Zealand Mint and other facilities to produce themed series for the international collector market — of which this Amber Route piece is one.
Elbląg, a Hanseatic city in what is now northern Poland, was a principal node in the medieval amber trade moving Baltic raw material southward toward Mediterranean markets. The city changed hands repeatedly — Teutonic Knights, Poland, Prussia, Sweden — before being almost entirely destroyed in 1945.
