The Tyniec Abbey, founded by Benedictine monks on a limestone cliff above the Vistula near Kraków, is one of the oldest continuously operating monasteries in Poland — its origins traced to the mid-eleventh century, likely under Casimir I. The chalice commemorated here survived the abbey's repeated destructions, including Swedish raids during the Deluge of the 1650s and later Prussian and Russian suppressions.
Niue's arrangement with the Polish mint for sacred relic-themed silver issues has produced some of the more historically grounded collector coinage in the Pacific island series.
