Reversbeschreibung The reverse, designed by Canadian artist Chris Gorey, commemorates the 175th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Graham Bell (1847–1922). A formal portrait of Bell in his later years occupies a central position, accompanied by a facsimile reproduction of his signature rendered in cursive script. Flanking schematic illustrations depict two of Bell's celebrated engineering achievements undertaken at his Baddeck, Nova Scotia estate: the Silver Dart biplane, which accomplished the first controlled powered flight in Canada in 1909, and the HD-4 hydrofoil, which set a world water-speed record in 1919, both associated with Bras d'Or Lake. The legend CANADA DOLLAR arcs across the upper field, with the bilingual inscription 175 YEARS/ANS prominently displayed, and the artist's initials CG appear in the lower field.

Zusätzliche Informationen

This dollar was issued to mark the 175th anniversary of Alexander Graham Bell's birth — he was born in Edinburgh in 1847, emigrated to Canada in 1870 following the deaths of his two brothers to tuberculosis, and became a Canadian citizen, a fact Americans who claim him as their own tend to overlook. Bell conducted his earliest telephone experiments while at his family's Brantford, Ontario property, Melville House, and he always credited Canada as the birthplace of the telephone despite the device's patent being filed in Washington.
