Reverse description The reverse, designed by Canadian artist Chris Gorey, commemorates the 175th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Graham Bell (1847–1922). A formal portrait of Bell in his later years occupies a central position, accompanied by a facsimile reproduction of his signature rendered in cursive script. Flanking schematic illustrations depict two of Bell's celebrated engineering achievements undertaken at his Baddeck, Nova Scotia estate: the Silver Dart biplane, which accomplished the first controlled powered flight in Canada in 1909, and the HD-4 hydrofoil, which set a world water-speed record in 1919, both associated with Bras d'Or Lake. The legend CANADA DOLLAR arcs across the upper field, with the bilingual inscription 175 YEARS/ANS prominently displayed, and the artist's initials CG appear in the lower field.
