Issued under Cook Islands' long-standing arrangement with the New Zealand government, which handles the territory's foreign affairs and defence while leaving it free to produce its own commemorative coinage — an arrangement that has made Cook Islands one of the more prolific commemorative issuers in the Pacific since the 1970s. The "A New World" series to which this piece belongs drew on themes of exploration and discovery, timed loosely to align with broader anniversary cycles in the late 2000s.
