The RSPCA was established in Australia in 1871, making it one of the oldest animal welfare organizations in the country and predating federation by three decades. This issue is part of a multi-coin series released by the Royal Australian Mint to mark the sesquicentenary, with different animals representing the breadth of the RSPCA's caseload — poultry featuring prominently given that factory farming complaints have constituted a growing share of the organization's investigations since the 1980s.
