This issue is part of a multi-coin series released by the Royal Australian Mint to mark the sesquicentenary, with different animals representing the breadth of the RSPCA's caseload — poultry featuring prominently given that factory farming complaints have constituted a growing share of the organization's investigations since the 1980s. The pad-printed color application is applied post-strike, a process the RAM has used increasingly since the 2000s to sidestep the limitations of traditional die engraving on small-denomination circulating stock.
