The denomination $1 is inscribed to the right of centre in the field, and the Perth Mint's P mintmark appears on the inner border at the right. The designer's initials NM are engraved at lower left, and the border is decorated with a radiating segmented pattern. |

Part of the Perth Mint's "Young Collectors" series aimed at introducing children to coin collecting, this issue used pad printing — an industrial transfer process borrowed from promotional merchandise manufacturing — to apply color directly onto the coin surface. The technique was still relatively novel in Australian numismatics at the time and produced results that age unpredictably, making fully intact examples harder to find than mintage figures suggest.
